"Mount Desert Island, The Perfect Destination Marathon"

Looking for the perfect destination to run a marathon? Look no further than Maine's pristine, Mount Desert Island Marathon. We are home to Acadia National Park, one of the most beautiful and complete vacation spots in the entire United States. Jonathan Beverly, editor at Running Times Magazine, in a recent feature about destination marathons (specifically Maui) wrote the article below, which we by the way give two thumbs up. For your pleasure and information we've added how we measure up in the categories Mr. Beverly cleverly conveyed in his piece. Our comments follow in bold after each point. We hope to see you in our starting field in October. A friendly reminder, don't wait, as our field is strictly limited to the first 1000 who enter.

Sincerely,
Gary Allen
race director & founder
Mount Desert Island Marathon

Top 10 things to Look for in a Destination Marathon:

by Jonathan Beverly, Editor Running Times Magazine

Experienced runners know how to choose a marathon in which to run well. We scour guides and canvas race veterans for details about the course, aid stations, accuracy of splits, start line organization, field size, and competitive level, weather history, and more. When it comes to choosing a race that will give us, and more importantly, our partner, spouse or families, a truly enjoyable vacation while we get in our marathon, we tend to be either ignorant or pig headed. Maui opened my eyes to how a marathon could be both a great vacation for me as a runner and for my wife and me as a couple. Following are some of the elements I'll look for the next time I want to combine the two.

1. (JB) Location. It should be a destination you would go to even if there was no marathon there. Ask your spouse or family if they'd like to take their vacation in the location, without mentioning the race, if the answer is "Why?" you probably need to find another race. Ideally it is a place where visitors are expected, welcomed and well cared for.

(MDI) Mount Desert Island is a top destination for almost every outdoor activity including but not limited to, running, cycling, rock climbing, kayaking, mountain climbing, and even beach combing. We are home to fabulous dining, shopping and world class accommodations all set in a natural, friendly, and quaint island atmosphere.

2. (JB) Location. The trip should be long enough, or a big enough deal, to justify spending at least an extra day or two there, making the ratio of R&R&R (Running, Resting and Relaxing) a little more proportional than most weekend races, where running, and the events around running, take up the vast majority of the time.

(MDI) Mount Desert Island is close enough to drive from major east coast cities (an easy 8 hours from NY) and well worth coming early and staying on after our marathon to explore all the wonderful surprises our island has to offer.

3. (JB) Location. Find a race where the field size to visitor infrastructure is appropriate. This will be different for every location, but it should be big enough that the local population knows about the race and accommodates it. (it isn't just you and the homeless people walking around downtown on Sunday morning), but not so big that the transportation and facilities are overwhelmed and it is impossible to ever get away from the race, the runners, and the attendant crowds.

(MDI) Mount Desert Island's many and unique accommodations are more than ample to serve all of our visitors. Our local population embraces our marathon and turn out in force to volunteer and cheer you on. The charming size of our island paradise makes it very user friendly and very easy to get around.

4. (JB) Convenience. Ensure that all the elements of the race are close to your hotel and other vacation activities. Too many marathon weekends are spent shuttling back and forth across cities or counties to the expo, pasta dinner, start and finish. In Maui, everything, including the finish line, was at the host hotel, which was a resort on the beach, adjacent to a key tourist town.

(MDI) The Mount Desert Island marathon starts on main street in Bar Harbor. Many of our previous years competitors marveled that they could easily walk from almost every Bed and Breakfast and Hotel directly to the starting line. Our expo and registration is in town and a short, pleasant stroll from almost any point in town. Our pasta dinner is held centrally close to Bar Harbor and Southwest Harbor at our local high school. We run on a point to point route and finish on main street in neighboring Southwest Harbor which offers equally great goods and services for athletes and their families that may wish to stay at the finish line.

5. (JB) Time. A hotel at the finish is especially nice for your family if the race starts early. You can get up before they wake, they can get up at their leisure, eat, take a walk or lay on the beach, and meet you at the finish rested, relaxed and happy to see you. You then with your marathon done, have nearly a full day to relax and focus on other activities with them.

(MDI) The Mount Desert Island Marathon starts at 8:00am, visiting friends and family that may want to sleep in can as our starting line is accessible on foot from almost every lodging choice that Bar Harbor offers. To catch the all important finish, friends and family members can make the easy drive or catch one of our convenient shuttle buses to watch the action in downtown Southwest Harbor.

6. (JB) Attention to details. Find a place that the other events that you want to attend, like the pasta party or awards ceremony, are worthwhile on their own, and cater to all in the group, not just the runner. Maui's pasta party was on a balcony overlooking the ocean at sunset, with tablecloths, live music, and a diverse buffet of food that was not only good for runners but just good.

(MDI) The Mount Desert Island was founded on details. We built our race from the ground up, for and by runners. All of our events have been planned and thought out to ensure both superb organization and great fun for every one of our attendees and their families.

7. (JB) A race for everyone. Great destination races have accompanying events to allow others to participate in the active vacation. Ideally these events are scheduled so that family members can support each other or share childcare, and they have their own identities, such as their own name and T-shirts so the "other" participant don't feel like also ran. Maui has the Maui Taco's 5K and a series of road miles the day before the marathon, and is adding a half marathon in 2004.

(MDI) The Mount Desert Island is a pure marathon meaning we politely disagree with Mr. Beverly on this one point for now. We do not hold accompanying events as we feel that all the attention should be focused on the marathon and the marathon runners. We dislike the trend of races artificially filling their fields by adding other distances to their marathons which we believe only takes up space and services that runners covering the entire 26.2 mile distance should be receiving. If at a later date an accompanying event is ever added it will not start at the same time as the marathon. None is planned at this time as all of our energy is going into putting together the best marathon we can produce.

8. (JB) A built in excuse. I believe you should try to run your best in any race, but giving your best is different than the myopic, monomaniacal focus that accompanies an attempt at your all-time best. If you know the race is going to be hot or to hilly for a PR, you'll be more patient with less-than-perfect pre-race itineraries, meals, sleep, or time on your feet -- and you're more likely to enjoy the days after the marathon, too.

(MDI) The Mount Desert Islands course was described as "tough but fair" by a runner in our first edition. We don't believe in excuses either, our course actually produced the fastest men's and women's winning times run in the state of Maine for 2003. Should the hills slow you, we advertised from day one our race as "one tough mother" featuring our infamous rhino ads, should you run less than a perfect race, you can just say, "the rhino got ya."

9. (JB) Faultless organization. You don't want to spend you vacation waiting in long lines for your number, standing in front of the hotel for a bus that doesn't show, fighting with a hotel receptionist over a race discount, etc. Find a race that has an impeccable reputation for doing things right.

(MDI) We at the Mount Desert Island Marathon are firstly, marathon runners, and secondly a highly motivated race committee. We have run marathons all over the US and bring back the good points we see and learn about things we don't want to happen at our event. We understand that something that you spend months in preparation for should be almost perfect to the letter. We constantly strive to bring you that level of perfection.

10. (JB) A scenic, creative, well thought-out course. OK, this last one is just for you, the runner. For a PR course, all I ask for is an open road and few distractions. But if I'm going to travel to a great place, I want a course that highlights it. I want a tour of the best the place has to offer, not just an arbitrary 26.2 miles of marked off highway. Maui's diverse course does this well, showing off what Cummins E. Speakman, Jr., in The History of Maui, the Magic Isle, identifies as Maui's advantages: "small-town charm combined with increased sophistication and the great variety of terrain and climate in a few short miles."

(MDI) Our Mount Desert Island Marathon course is in a word, breathtaking (not talking running here) We pass high vistas of the vast, blue expanse of the Atlantic Ocean, snug forests at peak (almost blinding) fall colors, pristine lakes that often reflect those fall colors, quaint, charming island village centers, high, pink granite mountains of Acadia National Park and the only fjord in the eastern USA, Somes Sound. Is our course beautiful? We think you might be distracted by our beauty to the point you'll forget you're even running a marathon. We are a real runners race and one of the top true destination marathons held in the country. We invite you to come run The Mount Desert Island Marathon and see for yourself.

(January 1, 2009) The race director of the MDI Marathon, Gary Allen was profiled in the January 1st, 2009 issue of the Boston Globe for his annual New Year's run over the fabled Boston Marathon route. This is the fifth consecutive year he has embarked on this year beginning trek over arguably the most historic route in running. This year he was joined by Ned Swain a fellow member of Crow Athletics and Ray Charbon and Brandon Villarreal representing the Somerville Road Runners. The run was highlighted by single digit temperatures throughout. The temperature at the start in Hopkinton was 3F and the reading near the finish line in Copley Square was a sweltering 7F. The 6th annual New Year's morning running of the infamous Boston Marathon route will take place on January 1st, 2010 starting at 6:00am sharp!

(January 1, 2009) It has always been the intention of the MDI Marathon to create one of the best and most scenic destination marathons heldin North America. This broad reaching idea has been and continues to be realized with every successive edition with runners from every US state, and many Canadian provinces having already attended the event. It was also part of the original plan to welcome runners from all over the world to compete with us on Mount Desert Island, this notion is one step closer to being realized by the release of the latest issue of Running Free Magazine, which is published in the United Kingdom. They have dedicated their full color, two page feature, 'Images of Inspiration' to our MDI Marathon. This exciting news is sure to help catapult our award winning event to even more recognition and will help bring more international runners to enjoy running in the state of Maine. (March 27, 2009) The Mount Desert Nursery School is pleased to, once again, be working with the Mount Desert Island Marathon on the 2009 Mile Marker Banners. Each year, artists from around the area create wonderful mile marker banners (26 in total). As a result of our experience last year as recipients of this fundraiser, we realized how much the runners appreciate a keepsake from their Marathon experience on MDI. The banners created last year were major works of art and several created bidding wars. One almost prompted a separate commission of work. The banners will be displayed in local libraries for several weeks prior to the marathon, and also on the Mount Desert Island Marathon website. During the marathon weekend, the banners will be displayed at the expo and pasta dinner. Silent Auction bidding will begin at an Opening near the end of September (date and location to be determined). Bidding will remain open until 1:00 p.m. on the day of the marathon Sunday, October 18, 2009. All proceeds from the Banner Auction will go directly to the Mount Desert Nursery School... Mr. Luchini was an eight time All-American while at Stanford University and holds the school record for 5,000 meters in 13:25. He was member of the prestigious Nike Farm team and more recently he is a member of the Oregon Track Club Elite Program. Among his many running achievements, he has both competed with and beat his former teammate, Ryan Hall, who won the US Olympic trials marathon in 2008 and finished 3rd overall at the 2009 Boston Marathon. Mr. Luchini has competed in international level track and field at home and in Europe, including the 2004 US Olympic track team trials. Mr Luchini had the honor of being invited to be an official pace setter at the 2008 Prefontaine Classic in Oregon where Ethiopian legend Kenenisa Bekele attempted a world record for 10,000 meters. He recently won the Maine Half Marathon held on October 4, in 1:06 and is slowly rounding back to top form after recovering from an achilles injury. (October 19, 2009) The 8th edition of the Mount Desert Island Marathon was another smash success! Competitors from all across the US, Canada, and abroad came to test themselves over our magnificent, undulating terrain. Our stunning course and professional event management team have earned many distinctions over the years including our marathon being named 'Most Scenic in North America' by ESPN. For the latest incarnation participants were once again greeted with peaking fall foliage that helped paint our course in strikingly vivid yellows, oranges, and reds. Our award winning route passes through Acadia National Park and along seaside cliffs, down tranquil village main streets, through dense forests and past pristine lakes. In the end, David Herr from Canaan, Vermont, became a deserving six-time champion and Amanda Labelle from Dedham, Maine, earned her first win at the MDI Marathon.

We also launched our ongoing Beyond the Finish Line: Charitable Fundraising Program this year. $1086.00 was raised toward our ultimate goal of $100,000.00, to support of many local charitable organizations. Winners of our 'free entry for life contest' who were the top contributors or fundraisers for each charity are as follows:

Our event also helped raise a combined total of over $11,000.00 in support of just two of the many other local charitable organizations we work with: Mt. Desert Nursery School and the MDI High School Music Boosters.

Registration is now open for our 2010 edition to be held on Sunday, October 17th. Our starting field is limited. We encourage potential participants to avoid disappointment and to sign-up now. Full results are here.

(October 23, 2009) Attention participants, supporters and friends of the MDI Marathon: Take your accomplishments 'Beyond the Finish Line' and make a contribution to one or more of the wonderful local charitable organizations we are working hard to help support. Our online fundraising campaign was newly launched in June of this year. It doesn't expire and was never meant to until we reach or exceed all of our fundraising goals, however long it takes. (Just like training for and finishing a marathon, we're in for the long-haul!) Stay tuned, because we will be naming the winners of our 'free entry for life' contest to the top fundraisers very soon!

All donated funds go directly to the designated charities of your choice.

(November 5, 2009) Mount Desert Island Marathon organizers have enjoyed a strong presence at the New York City Marathon for many years. This year they were once again included in many of the VIP festivities surrounding the world famous event, including the international breakfast run, assorted news conferences, exclusive finish line seating, transportation and several delicious meals, which were celebrated at Tavern on The Green. This year our event coordinator, Mary Ropp, competed in and completed her first marathon in 5:10:31. Gary Allen, our race director, finished his 74th career marathon (57th below 3 hours) in 2:54:56 which was good for 19th overall in the men's 50-54 age division. Congratulations to our runners and many thanks to the New York Road Runners for the hospitality they extended to every member of the MDI Marathon organizing team.

His time of 2:59:04 placed him in 12th overall and 2nd in the men's 50-54 division.

"Speaking on behalf of the marathon we are completely thrilled to work with the Bar Harbor Times," said Gary Allen, the marathon's founder and director. "By naming our first ever official media sponsor it will allow us to more easily share regular and breaking information, including many new features about the race, our competitors and all the related events that are planned for another record-breaking marathon week."

(June 17, 2008) Bar Harbor - The Mount Desert Island Marathon, voted 'Most Scenic in North America' by ESPN, has created a new relay division open only to Maine police and fire department members. The MDI Marathon - Police & Fire Pursuit will feature teams which consist of five officers or fire fighters from the around the state. Four members will run 6 miles each and then hand off to the next with the fifth member running 2.2 miles to the finish line. This friendly competition is loosely patterned after the popular tradition of NYPD and NYFD members who annually run in the New York City Marathon with bragging rights going to the winning departments. The MDI Marathon is issuing a challenge and invitation to all police and fire departments statewide. As an added incentive they will waive all entry fees for participating relay squads and are encouraging individual departments to launch fundraising campaigns around their teams participation to help support their various causes or other charitable work. MDI Marathon will provide pledge sheets to participating departments to assist with meeting individual departments fund raising goals. The winning police and fire departments will be crowned at the finish line. More information here.

(October 7, 2008) The Mount Desert Nursery School held an opening of the 2008 MDI Marathon banner art at the Great Harbor Maritime Museum in Northeast Harbor on Monday, October 6th. The opening formally introduced the 2008 MDI Marathon Mile Marker Banners to the public and commenced the silent auction format bidding for these beautiful, unique banners. Each year, artists from around the state create 26 unique and original banners. "We are excited to combine the talents of the local arts communities with the energy of the MDI Marathon to help raise funds in support of such an important organization as Mt. Desert Nursery School," said Mary Ropp, marketing director of the marathon. "Mount Desert Nursery School is honored to have been chosen to work with the MDI Marathon committee to help produce the 2008 Mile Marker Banners", said Mount Desert Nursery School fundraiser, Heather Jones. After the opening, the banners will hang in local businesses around the island. During the weekend of the marathon, the banners will be moved to the marathon expo held at the Atlantic Oaks. They will be moved again to the official pre-race pasta dinner to be held on Saturday evening at MDIHS, and finally will hang at the finish line in Southwest Harbor on October 19th, MDI Marathon Day. The silent auction bidding will close at 1:00PM with winning bids announced shortly after.

Race participants covet these banners as lasting way to commemorate their substantial achievements. They also make excellent corporate art, giving businesses both a way to show their support for the event and a way to make a generous contribution to a worthwhile local organization. 100% of the proceeds benefit the Mount Desert Nursery School. For more information contact Heather Jones at 207-276-5563. Visit the Community Partners page of our website to view the banners.

(October 7, 2008) Running a marathon is one thing, but running one every single day for over a year while totaling 11,000 miles is another. The Run for One Planet, North America Tour is a carbon neutral yearlong run around the continent by two Canadians, Matt Hill and Stephanie Tait. They left Vancouver BC on May 4 and have run east all the way across Canada, running into communities, towns, and cities to meet with, speak to, and inspire people to take simple daily actions to help improve the planet's environment, to show that "small steps add up" and that collectively we can all make a difference in our quest to improve ourselves and our environment. They duo are now making their way south through Nova Scotia and will be special guests on the starting line for the 7th running of the Mount Desert Island Marathon on Sunday, October 19th. They will also appear at the pre-race pasta dinner hosted by the MDI Music Boosters to be held at MDIHS on Saturday, October 18th, starting at 5:30pm.

Visit runforoneplanet.com to learn more or make a donation in support of this important and worthwhile global environmental initiative today. The goal is to run a marathon each day, inspire 1 million new eco-actions for the earth, and raise $1 million for the Run for One Planet, legacy of action, that provides seed capital for eco-system enhancement initiatives around North America, granted to and driven by local community engagement and action.

Please patronize downtown Southwest Harbor and the rest of the 'Quietside' and thank them for hosting our event. Have a great and safe race!

(October 14, 2008) Theseeds of the Mount Desert Island Marathon were first sown almost 28 years ago while attending the 1980 New York City Marathon. Gary Allen, MDI Marathon founder and race director, personally witnessed the NYC Marathon's colorful founder, Fred Lebow, in action. He promised himself that day he would eventually start a marathon back home in Maine. In the winter of 2001 his passion for running marathons spawned the event that has literally raised the bar with every successive edition. We are currently one of, if not the top ranked destination marathons held in all of North America.

Mr Lebow died in 1994. His event the New York City Marathon has been credited with literally changing the city and the tens of thousands of lives it touched.

Last winter Mr. Allen and Mary Ropp, marketing director of the MDI Marathon, were invited to attend the world premier of Run For Your Life, a documentary about Fred Lebow at the world famous Tribeca Film Festival, founded by Jane Rosenthal and Robert DeNiro in 2002 in response to the September 11th attacks on the Tribeca neighborhood of lower Manhattan.

At that event the director, Judd Ehrlich, and others seen in the film appeared on stage after the screening. Mr. Allen rose from his seat to say how Lebow's vision inspired a marathon held back in Maine. The award winning film, Run For Your Life is being released on DVD on October 28. However, like Lebow's trademark 'find a way to get it done' attitude, Allen contacted Mr. Ehrlich and asked if he might get a few copies 10 days early for the upcoming Mount Desert Island Marathon. Mr. Ehrlich generously agreed and limited advance copies of this fantastic film will be available at various times and locations during MDI Marathon weekend. These DVDs are not available anywhere on the planet until October 28th, making them true collector's editions, not to mention the well documented ties to the founding roots of the MDI Marathon. The MDI Marathon is working on an advance screening to be held over marathon weekend, location and times TBA.

Mr. Allen, Ms. Ropp, and the rest of the MDI Marathon race committee attend the NYC Marathon as their special guests each year, and in what has become an annual tradition, they bring the bronze statue of Fred Lebow a finisher's medal from the just concluded MDI Marathon as a small gesture and simple thank-you for providing the spirit, inspiration, and motivation that made our event happen.

We hope you enjoy this film, and if you are lucky enough to get a copy, remember that many scenes resonate perfectly with things that have happened along the way to bringing our event from a simple promise to what we all enjoy today on Mount Desert Island.

(October 19, 2008) The 7th edition of the Mount Desert Island Marathon dawned with picture perfect weather for both serious competitors and for those who merely hoped to finish our scenic and challenging route. The peaking crimson, yellow, and orange fall foliage partnered with light winds and temperatures in the 40s seemed custom ordered for a truly memorable and spectacular day. The 2008 Mount Desert Island Marathon, presented by Bar Harbor Brewing Co., featured a large starting field representing 49 states, 5 Canadian provinces, and many countries abroad. Our special guest speaker and honorary race starter was Maine's Sheri Piers, who excelled in the 2008 women's Olympic Trials Marathon, held in Boston.

As the starter's cannon echoed off lower Main Street in picturesque downtown Bar Harbor, "Mr. MDI Marathon", David Herr from Canaan, Vermont, assumed his place at the front of the field, holding off all challengers, and winning again for the fifth time in seven attempts in a time of 2:36:45. (As if his mastery of our course needs to be further scrutinized, Mr. Herr has placed a convincing second in both of his other appearances at the MDI Marathon.) Jeff Day from, Berea, Ohio, placed second in 2:41:18. He was followed by Antoine Arcand of Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada, in 2:41:30. Eric Rudolph of Sullivan was the first Maine finisher and fourth overall in 2:41:50, and is the RRCA State Champion.

The top three finishers in ladies race was dominated by Maine runners. Late entrant Jenna Krajewski of China set a new course record of 3:03:02. She was followed to the finish line by 2006 champion Debbie Moreau of Turner, in 3:09:15. Amada Lebelle of Dedham, running her first marathon, claimed the third spot in 3:10:34.

Meanwhile hundreds of marathoners ranging in age from 16 to 75 traversed our postcard perfect towns and villages while enjoying many breathtaking seaside and woodland vistas. When the day ended, the 2008 Mount Desert Island was the largest of the six previous editions held, with 699 official finishers. They were cheered on by several thousand spectators and over 400 volunteers. Of the four teams who entered, the host club, Crow Athletics, were victorious for the second year in a row, over teams representing Sub5 Track Club, the Baltimore Pacemakers, and McKay's Public House Womens Team. Also featured, was the new Police/Fire/Rescue Charity Relay, won by Mt. Desert Police Department in 4:29:18. Full results. Race coverage by the Bar Harbor Times Village Soup, here.

Gordon Kelly
(November 7, 2008) While running the MDI Marathon course, you might have noticed people on the side of the road talking into walkie talkies. These are ham radio operators who are there to report on the progress of the runners, watch for medical emergencies and just to be available for general assistance.

One of these hams was a very special fellow; Gordon E. Kelly N1RGP. Gordon passed away October 24, 2008 at 76 years of age. Gordon let the race officials know the day before the big event this fall that he just couldn't make it this year due to a bad cold. He deeply regretted not being able to assist with the marathon. What made Gordon special was that he would pass out his own space blankets if the weather got cold and he felt a particular runner might be getting hypothermic. He also would let runners get warmed up in his vehicle or transport runners who could go no further. Once all the runners cleared his post, Gordon would slowly drive the course to assist those who might need aid or to alert other hams to watch out for a runner who was looking rather tired or lame. Gordon wasn't a runner, but he did go that extra mile. Gordon drove a school bus in Hancock County for 30 years and felt responsible for every child that stepped foot on his bus. He felt the same way about every runner on the MDI course; personally responsible for their safety and welfare. We shall miss him!

Red Lobster is back as the presenting sponsor, last year they heavily featured the MDI Marathon in effective advertising campaigns seen at all of their restaurants which are located all across the Untied States and Canada. For starters the MDI Marathon will add several online features to their popular web site, intended to help prospective tri-athletes and teams learn more and register for the popular Lions Club event. Both groups are working on several longer term initiatives and programs that will be unveiled as they become available. Our race route featured over 400 volunteers and hundreds of spectators who created a fun and festive atmosphere. The race was kicked off on Main St. in Bar Harbor by our honorary race starter, Kim Lopdrup the president of Red Lobster. The lead group featured David Herr from Canaan, VT a two time champion of our race, Andy Beardsley from Surry Maine a top finisher of every edition of our event and a tight pack of others who patiently watched the race unfold from just behind. Mr. Herr was alone at the finish with church bells pealing his arrival and crowds cheering him home on Main St. in Southwest Harbor, and thereby notching a very convincing third victory in his five attempts, finishing in 2:35:16. Mr. Beardsley came to the finish line next in 2:40:41 followed by Eric Rudolph from Sullivan, ME in 3rd place in 2:47:25. Meanwhile, in the women's race Debra Moreau from Turner, ME won in 3:16:24, beaming and looking completely relaxed as she broke the finishers tape after successfully out-running a record women's field including two time champion Lara Judson from Mt. Desert, ME in 3:23:21. Sharon Mitchell from Raymond, NH cruised in 30 seconds later finishing 3rd in 3:23:51. We have received hundreds of positive correspondences from both participants, sponsors, volunteers, spectators and are understandably pleased, but never satisfied and we are already hard at work to produce an even better event to be held next on Sunday October 14, 2007. Our goal remains to produce the premiere destination marathon in North America. Congratulations to you all, we hope to see you next year!

(June 17, 2005) Northeast Harbor, ME - The 2005 Mount Desert Island Marathon is honored to announce the return of our very special guest, Dick Beardsley, famous for his epic "Duel in the Sun" in one of the most memorable duels in the history of the Boston Marathon waged on a sun-scorched afternoon in 1982. Wayland resident Alberto Salazar, and Minnesota dairy farmer Dick Beardsley fought one another over the nine-mile stretch from the Newton Hills, to the finish. Beardsley did the front running, with Salazar tucked in behind on their record pace. With less than one mile remaining, Salazar moved to the front and a sprint finish ensued. Salazar emerged victorious in 2:08:52, with Beardsley just two seconds back (2:08:54), marking the first time two runners had broken 2:09:00 in the same race. In 2002 The University of Minnesota Press published his autobiography, Staying the Course. Dick, who is now a national caliber masters runner also ran our 2004 MDI Marathon finishing 5th overall. Johnny Kelley

(August 29, 2005) Northeast Harbor, ME - There has long been a rumor that a marathon was held up in Aroostook County, and our Crow Athletics historian extraordinare Ryan King has uncovered absolute conclusive evidence which makes this myth finally a fact. It was a long held belief that Maine's oldest marathon was the Paul Bunyan Marathon first held in Bangor in 1975. Ryan's hours spent in dusty archives have paid handsomely and now show a marathon was held a full 25 years sooner on July 22, 1950. It was the Maine AAU Potato Blossom Marathon held in Fort Fairfield Maine. The race was won by John Lafferty, a navy man from Quonset Point, Rhode Island in 2:44:07. The runner up was none other than Johnny Kelley from West Acton, Massachusetts just 34 seconds behind. (cont.)

(July 23, 2003) Our MDI Marathon has been accepted as an associate member of AIMS (Association of International Marathons and Road Races). Only 17 other marathons in the entire USA are included in this prestigious and difficult to be accepted into organization, among them Boston, Maui, Washington, DC (Marine Corp) New York, Chicago, Las Vegas, Honolulu, Seattle and NOW Mount Desert Island! This will help us compete on a Global stage for runners, press, status and further development.

Our course is now recognized by even more intense IAAF(International Association of Athletics Federation) and AIMS standards, as well as the USATF (USA Track and Field) standards which we had in place for our inaugural edition. This coupled with our newly awarded "Most Scenic Sports Event in the USA" in 2002 will help drive our event forward with tremendous momentum. We can expect many more runners from countries abroad to come compete on the roads of Mount Desert Island and for many years to come with this exciting news.

(October 21, 2003) Under what many described as perfect cool marathon weather conditions, 402 runners from 33 states and four countries finished the second Mount Desert Island Marathon on Sunday, October 19, 2003, starting from the village green in Bar Harbor and traversing Mount Desert Island's rocky coastline and rolling hills, and finishing in downtown Southwest Harbor.

Last year's winner David Herr, 38, from Canaan, VT returned to repeat his win, managing to shave seven seconds off the course record with his finishing time of 2:34:24. Hometown Bar Harbor runner Lara Judson, 22, was the top female, outpacing many hardened veteran marathoners through this notoriously hilly course, and finishing with a time of 3:07:03, taking ten minutes off her own time from last year and eclipsing the record of 3:09:42 set last year by New Hampshire's Kim Pursley-Goff. Nine runners, including repeater 56-year-old Bob Sholl of Scarborough, broke three hours this year.

Island residents turned out in force this year to cheer and assist as the number of orange-shirted race volunteers nearly equaled the number of runners. Reflecting the idiosyncratic charm of this event, once again a silent auction of original art mile-marking banners by area artists helped raise money for the Mount Desert Island High School's music boosters.

While most runners entered expecting a tough course, many runners were happily surprised by their times. "A tough course, but fair," seemed to be a common consensus. A lot of people commented afterward that they liked that the race had both incredible scenery and a small town feeling while still having the roadside support and tight organization of a big-time race.
